Course Overview

Media Design School is the first tertiary provider in New Zealand to offer a qualification with a dedicated stream focusing on two of the world’s biggest emerging technologies: Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

With the addition of New Zealand’s first AR/VR stream, Media Design School’s Graduate Diploma of Creative Technologies (GDCT) students are able to refine their respective crafts in the fields of VR or AR with the support of award-winning lecturers from a diverse array of digital disciplines

If you are looking for a supportive hands-on learning environment that focuses on developing practical skills through working on self-initiated projects, then the Graduate Diploma in Creative Technologies is for you.

The GDCT will help you further develop your production and design skills through both project-based and problem-based learning.

You’ll investigate, propose and produce projects in the creative area of your choice that compliment your existing skill-set. As you choose your own research topic, you may opt to work across multiple disciplines, to broaden your skill base and increase your career options.

Graduates from this programme go on to work in a diverse range of careers, depending on the focus of their research project. Examples include:

  • Business owner or freelancer lifestyle
  • Web designer, mobile and front end developer

  • Film post production and animation

Course Outline

Students develop and deepen their skills and understanding in an open studio-based programme where they investigate, propose and produce a project (or series of projects) determined by their own interests within the broader creative technologies domain.

Students can choose to either work within a particular creative technologies discipline, or across disciplines, and can work towards either professional, academic, exploratory or experimental learning outcomes.

The course is student-centered with students being proactive independent learners, responsible both for what they learn and how they learn. The course provides a flexible framework, supportive environment and collaborative learning culture. Faculty guide students through their learning as mentors, with the focus on developing students' critical thinking, problem-solving and research skills. This enables them to become effective life-long learners.

Semester 1:

Learning Methods

At the beginning of the course, students complete a 'Learning Methods' component, where they become familiar with self-directed learning and research methods. With faculty guidance, students refine their objectives and produce an outline of their proposed investigation.

Research and Development
Students undertake further research and learning. This may include in-class tutorials and discussions, online tutorials, individual research, production exercises, projects and collaborative learning. This is an opportunity for students to complete a production cycle and produce a proof-of-concept or prototype to support their proposal. During this period there will be regular critique sessions where students present their work and findings to their peers.

In parallel with the research and development students develop and complete their proposal for their final project or projects by the end of the semester. The proposal is informed by their research and development and can be supported by any proof-of-concepts or prototypes that have been produced.

Semester 2:

Project Production

Students develop and complete their final creative projects and write their final investigation report. This may involve further learning and research needed to complete the project. During this period there will also be regular critique sessions where students present their work-in-progress to their peers. Students have the opportunity to take classes across Media Design School to further enhance their skills and knowledge.

Entry Requirements

Open to applicants with a degree qualification, or relevant professional experience in a creative technologies domain.

All applicants need to provide evidence to support the level of skill required for a self-directed investigation. There are several opportunities to do this when applying, in these documents:

  • Your portfolio
  • Your letter of intent
  • Additional relevant qualification transcripts (optional)
  • Additional statement from employer and your resume (optional)

For all international students: The IELTS score required is Academic IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5 (or equivalent).


If you are applying for Graduate Studies you'll already have a body of work and a portfolio. When applying, we'll expect your portfolio to be to a professional standard, clearly indicate your areas of interest, and who you are as an artist. We would also like to see your show-reel if applicable, for areas of interest such as visual effects and motion graphics.
