Admission Requirements

Minimum qualification of NCEA University Entrance or equivalent, such as CIE or IB University Entrance, or, level 4 or higher Qualification from a related discipline. Plus, you will need to have fulfilled the following credit requirements: 28 NCEA Credits, Level 3, in a range of the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Technology.

Portfolio Requirements

A portfolio is not required if you are applying for Cloud Computing (Bachelor of Software Engineering).

Overview

Course Overview

Study a Bachelor of Software Engineering in Cloud Computing and you’ll leave MDS armed with a range of technical, operational and software management skills that will put you a step ahead in the global tech industry. Throughout your studies, you’ll work across a variety of services and platforms to build a comprehensive, industry-aligned understanding of Cloud Computing and DevOps.

Developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services, the Bachelor of Software Engineering in Cloud Computing is the first qualification of its kind in New Zealand.

Course Outline

What you'll cover in this course

Year One - Your first year will cover the foundational skills of software engineering, DevOps and Cloud Computing, with an introduction to computer graphics and practical mathematical skills. You’ll develop an understanding of different service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), architectures/platforms and virtualization in today’s industry.

Year Two - Delve deeper into the world of software engineering with an intro to data science and a focus on cloud app development and network design. You’ll learn how to design, develop & deploy applications to AWS, while discovering the core principles of security by design and exploring the vital field of human-centered design.

Year Three - Expand your technical knowledge and round out your skill set with a focus on tools for DevOps, data mining, visualisation and creative enterprise. In your final semester you’ll learn to scale and monitor your projects, with advanced tech-work integrated learning culminating in the production of an industry-standard capstone project.

To apply for this degree, you'll need a minimum qualification of NCEA University Entrance or equivalent, such as:

  • An appropriate qualification from an overseas secondary school or tertiary institution, deemed by Media Design School to be sufficient for admission into a bachelors programme.
  • CIE (University of Cambridge International Examination)
  • IB (International Baccalaureate)
  • Plus, you will need to have fulfilled the following credit requirements:
  • 28 NCEA Credits, Level 3, in a range of the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Technology.

If you are enrolled at a New Zealand secondary school and have not yet completed your NCEA (CIE or equivalent) qualification, you can still apply now for admission. When your NCEA results are available in January, we will check them and contact you.

International Students: If you are an international student, you'll need to prove you have sufficient English language skills in order to complete this course. We'll be looking for Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 (minimum) with no band less than 5.5, or equivalent qualification if English is not your first language.

If English is not your first language, you may be required to provide satisfactory evidence of your proficiency in English in the form of a recent IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score , TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score or a Pearson’s Test of English (PTE) from an accredited organisation.
