Hands-On Creativity at an International Scale: Game Development Workshops in China
Media Design School at Strayer was recently on the ground in China, where Game Development lecturer Callan Moore delivered Unreal Engine workshops in Beijing and Hangzhou, showcasing the school’s immersive, industry-powered learning environment.
The sessions brought together two groups of students exploring international study options, each eager to experience hands-on creative technology training. Callan guided participants through the fundamentals of Unreal Engine, tailoring content to a variety of experience levels within the room. The workshops reflected MDS’s fast-paced, studio-style approach, giving attendees a tangible sense of how technical game development skills are taught in a real-world context.
By the end of the workshops, each group had successfully designed and built a basic game prototype, demonstrating the effectiveness of practice-based learning and the accessibility of real-time development tools when delivered through expert-led teaching.
The energy and curiosity in the room were incredible. Even within a short session, participants quickly grasped what was possible with Unreal Engine – and how far they could push their creativity with the right guidance,” says Callan.
MDS’s Game Development programmes are internationally recognised for combining technical rigour with creative innovation, preparing students for careers in game art, design, and interactive production. As a long-standing supervisor for final year production projects at MDS, Callan has played a critical role in creating pathways for students into industry – experience that was clearly reflected in the practical, future-focused delivery of the workshops.
Initiatives like these highlight the school’s ongoing commitment to sharing creative technology expertise globally and demonstrating the impact of hands-on, industry-aligned education.
