Sofia Piven

Lecturer - Bachelor of Creative Technologies

Sofia is a Lecturer for the Bachelor of Creative Technologies (Game Art). With a background in anthropology and philosophy, she is interested in how different cultural and ethical perspectives shape the design and (ab)uses of digital technology.

Sofia has worked in research and graduate teaching roles at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington, now a PhD candidate in anthropology at the University of Auckland.

Her work investigates the utility and ethics of 3D digital twins for documenting and analysing human burials in archaeological research and cultural heritage contexts. Sofia’s holistic view of ethics, technology, and cultural values informs her approach to game studies - she loves examining the different ways games are used by players, how games play with the past, and the hidden assumptions they formalise.
