Award-Winning Success for ‘Six Concertos’

Six Concertos, a Carbon Arc studio production with animation and visual effects produced by students from Media Design School’s Bachelor of Art & Design (3D Animation & VFX) programme, has claimed multiple accolades at the Melbourne Cineverse film festival.

The film, which screened at the Aotearoa Showcase at Auckland’s Capitol Cinema on 21 May, was awarded Best Director for Senior Lecturer Peter McCully and Best Cinematography for Jack Barry. It also received nominations for Best Film and Best Actor for Venetia Clark.

Set against the backdrop of World War Two, Six Concertos tells the story of a music-loving archivist on a mission to save a precious manuscript as Germany is bombed by the allies. Its compelling narrative and cinematic excellence have earned recognition on the international stage - testament to the professional calibre of its production.

Films like Six Concertos give our students VFX production experience, working shoulder to shoulder with professionals, applying their skills and knowledge and developing the interdisciplinary teamwork skills they will need to hit the ground running in the workplace. I feel we’ve succeeded if a student’s last day of studies mirrors their first day on the job.”
- Steve Dorner, Associate Dean

What sets Media Design School apart is that our students don’t just work on student films - they work on professional films. This means students studying visual effects and 3D animation work in a VFX studio environment with the highest quality production materials, produced by seasoned industry experts and we have the awards to prove it. Learners collaborate with and are led by directors, computer graphic and VFX supervisors in industry-standard post-production pipelines on award-winning films that hold their own against professional competition. Sure, MDS students get to work on student-run film projects like at most schools, but unlike other institutions our students get the added benefit of being emersed in a real-world VFX industry production experience.

If you’re ready to bring stories to life through world-class animation and visual effects, applications are still open for the July intake of the Bachelor of Art & Design (3D Animation & VFX).
