Students’ gold, silver and bronze success at Best Awards is ‘priceless’

News

A night of nervous anticipation turned out one of elation and celebration for Media Design School students and graduates at The Designers Institute of New Zealand’s Best Awards on Friday night (4th Oct).

One by one, they walked away with gold, silver and bronze awards at the annual gala showcase in front of thousands at Auckland’s largest stadium, Spark Arena.

The Awards covered graphic, spatial, product, interactive and motion design along with four boutique awards under professional and student categories.

Our MDS winners included:

Gold - Student Interactive: Pick team

Silver - Nga Aho Design with Maori Focus: Kauri Lounge team

Silver – Student Public Good: Mona Gabr for Pick

Silver – Student Interactive Design: Tohu team

Bronze – Student Product: Pick team

Finalist – Public Good: Melody Renaud for Moments

The Best Awards have been running for over 30 years and are highly prized by industry and the design community alike. They’re open to industry professionals and students and are judged by highly respected industry professionals over seven days of judging.

Jim Murray, Lecturer and Program Coordinator for Design-Graphic at MDS, said success at the awards was important for the students and faculty as a whole.

“Achieving Gold and Silver for interactive design was a great accomplishment for our Bachelor of Media Design Students and our faculty.

I’m particularly proud of the Ngā Aho and public good awards, these awards demonstrate a collective focus by MDS to embrace here for good projects.

Seeing our students' work on the huge screens inside the monumental Spark Arena, having their hard work recognised and knowing that these awards will make a meaningful difference to their future careers was priceless.”

The students’ success this year just adds to the success of our talented students from last year.

“Last year Lauren Chalk, a Bachelor or Media Design student, took home the Gold Award in the Public Good category for her wearable tech concept which aims to appeal to young people suffering from hearing loss. We also picked up Silver and Bronze in Public Good,” Jim Murray said.

We can't wait to see what these talented students achieve next.
