Dr. Mike Watts brings 25 years of experience to Media Design School's faculty

As Programme Coordinator of the BIT, Mike is responsible for ensuring that courses are delivered on schedule and as approved by NZQA. He supports students by monitoring their studies and ensuring that they are progressing as planned.

Mike has more than 25 years in tertiary education, he has taught in universities and institutes across New Zealand and Australia. He began teaching while a PhD student at the University of Otago’s Department of Information Science, where from 2000 to 2004 he served as a Senior Teaching Fellow. In this role, he taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses while guiding students in research projects. After earning his PhD in 2004, Mike was a postdoctoral researcher at Lincoln University, the University of Sydney, and the University of Adelaide.

From 2012 to 2022, he served as Head of the School of Information Technology at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS). There, he led curriculum development, introduced new postgraduate IT qualifications, and spearheaded the transition to digital teaching and assessment methods—changes that modernised the school’s approach to learning.

Since 2022, Dr. Watts has been a Senior Lecturer in AI and Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor of Information Technology at Media Design School in Auckland. In this position, he teaches AI and software engineering.
