New Logo for Melbourne

With the big polemic surrounding Auckland Supercity logo design competition, I thought it would be great to show what another city, not so far from New Zealand, has just been doing.

We are nowadays in a situation where, from my point of view, we are basically aiming to get the best result for the smallest investment, and this is certainly not always the best way to approach the design a logo. You logo is in fact your brand, your identity, your everything. And you just can’t take it lightly.

To read more about that train of thought, have a look at our own Graphic Design Course Leader’s opinion here.

The fact and the matter is that Melbourne City has just updated its identity, moving from a rather conservative, “academic” brand to a much more dynamic, colourful logo, much more in line with stepping into a new decade. And, in my opinion, they have done it well. Not only because the logo is quite distinctive and in your face, but also because it feels it’s had work done in the background to get to that design.

So as far as I am concerned, it is a win on Melbourne side. And it will be interesting to see what happens with Auckland Supercity Logo in the next few months. Don’t forget to check our post on this matter. There are some good comments on there.

But really. What do you think?
