The Annual MDS Bright Awards!

The Bright Awards are back for 2023, and with a few changes!

The Bright Awards are a celebration of secondary school students across Aotearoa who are bringing their creative craft to life.

For six years, the Bright Awards have provided an opportunity for young creatives to showcase their hard work and support their first steps towards carving a place for themselves in the industry. Media Design School wants to continue providing a creative outlet to help young creatives prove to themselves that they have what it takes to study their passion at tertiary level, make a career out of what they love, and provide the means to reach those goals.

As a winner of a Bright Award from one of the categories, you will not only be recognised as one of New Zealand’s top young creative-talents-to-watch, you will also earn $2000 for yourself and $3000 for your school!

Time to pull out all the stops, and show us what you create!

Entries open to Year 12 and Year 13 High School Students until Friday 6th October.

Entry categories:

Bright Awards 2022

Celebrating 5 years of rewarding creativity in high schools around NZ

NEW: Digital Design

In this category, we’ll be looking for pieces that represent you as a graphic or UI/UX designer.

As a graphic designer, this could be traditional or digital art and can span anything from works that create a visual identity for a person or organisation (such as logos, typefaces, letterhead or posters); magazine covers or layouts; product packaging and design; designs specifically for t-shirts or apparel; or illustrations.

As a UI/UX designer, this could be anything that explores user interface or user experience. Website, apps, or prototypes that reflect your creativity and provide functionality while embracing design.

We’re looking for work that is all your own – that is, work that is based off of original thoughts, concepts and ideas that you have created yourself. Our judge will be looking at both the aesthetics of your design ideas (what it looks like visually) and the user friendliness and functionality of your concept.

Photography

In the Photography category, we’re looking for an image, or series of images, that showcase your skills as a photographer. We’ll be judging your work based on your creativity, the composition of the shot, and the story or narrative behind it (so it may be a good idea to also send us a brief explanation about what you were trying to achieve or convey through your shot/s, though this is entirely optional).

Games

The Games category is open to everyone from 2D or 3D artists who have devised a concept for a game to those who have created their own playable demo. We’re looking for work that is all your own – that is, work that is based off of original thoughts, concepts and ideas that you have created yourself. Our judge will be looking at both the aesthetics of your design ideas (what it looks like visually) and the user friendliness and functionality of your concept.

Animation

A submission in the Animation category could be anything from a concept for a 2D or 3D character right through to an animated short film. We’re looking for work that is based off concepts and ideas that you have created by yourself (so no replication or fan art, please). We’ll also be judging this category based on the potential story behind the creative output, originality, and the technical execution of the animation.

“Stories spark imagination. Imagination ignites creativity.”
