Media Design School AdSchool students shortlisted for Future Lions award

News

MDS’s AdSchool has added to its string of accolades this week with the news that students Rebecca Sharp and Madison Norgrove have been shortlisted for a prestigious Future Lions award.

Now in its 13th year, the undergrad Future Lions competition is designed to celebrate upcoming creative talent and is judged by AKQA and Google in London, with the winners announced at the Cannes Festival in June.

This year’s theme, ‘Create Tomorrow’, attracted a record-breaking 2,290 participants, with entries from 386 schools across 55 countries.  The future-facing brief asked entrants to ‘Connect an audience of your choosing to a product or service in a way that wasn’t possible three years ago’.

The AdSchool team’s interpretation came in the form of a brief for Libra. They took a well-worn currency, women asking other women for a tampon or pad, and turned that concept into an actual currency.  The result was a multi-token, female cryptocurrency that can be used by female investors around the world to help women in period poverty. Watch it in full here.

The team’s inclusion on the shortlist follows another recent AdSchool success, with seven students recently receiving merit awards at the New York-based One Show with their brief for Sonnet Insurance.

AdSchool CD Kate Humphries, said, "It was a brief that had been on the Young Ones page since November last year. In mid-February, a mere two weeks into our 2018 programme, we decided to play catch-up with all the Northern Hemisphere students by throwing a whole classful of new students straight into the deep end with, of all things, an insurance brief, and under two weeks left on the clock until the deadline hit."

"We were the only school from Australasia to make it to the finalist stages, and this week we felt particularly buoyant to hear the news that seven of our newbie finalists scored merit awards for their ideas.  Congratulations to all students involved: Philip Meki, Tatiana Grigore & Rebecca Sharp (again) for Sonnet Perfumes; Tess Saxby & William Budgett for A lot happens in cars; and Hannah Stokes & Maisie D'Cruz for Upcycled Accidents."
