Tiran had already established a successful career as the head of the video department at Grant McCann advertising agency in Sri Lanka before a chance meeting at ADFEST in Thailand led him to considering a change in direction.
"I was at ADFEST in Thailand, where I got a chance to meet lots of talented people from around the world. I met Marko Klijn, the owner of Circkus Animation in New Zealand, and I had a long chat with him about New Zealand's creative industry. He recommended I look at studying with Media Design School."
Soon after this exchange, and despite not knowing a lot about what to expect, Tiran was on a plane from Sri Lanka to Auckland, New Zealand, where he had enroled in Media Design School's Graduate Diploma in Creative Technologies.
"I was amazed by how friendly the staff were. They helped everyone in every way possible so the newbies could settle in easily - especially the international students," says Tiran.
For Tiran, one of highlights of the GDCT programme was having to create their final Capstone project.
"Having to present our own projects to the whole panel of tutors and to present it to the public in an exhibition was a pretty awesome experience for everyone, I believe."
After completing the GDCT programme, Tiran landed a full time job with Auckland's Top Shelf Production House, where he now works as a Multimedia Designer.
"At Top Shelf, I work mainly on TV commercials, trailers and promos, where I have to utilise my animation, design, and video editing skills. I believe this is a rather challenging and enjoyable job."
Tiran enjoys the work culture in New Zealand and says that it differs to what he had experienced previously in Sri Lanka and says he particularly values the "friendly colleagues, fewer late night shifts, and [people placing] a value on what you do"
"In New Zealand, we get more freedom and space to create our own artefacts while in Sri Lanka, you have to be a more of an operator and follow guidelines."
Tiran recommends that anyone considering studying 3D Animation enrol at Media Design School because of the "industry recognition and experienced tutors from around the world,"
"Media Design School is an idyllic place for students who want to be successful in the creative industries."
