Take us through what you do and what a typical day at Rising Sun Pictures looks like...
"I am currently a Look Development Technical Assistant at Rising Sun Pictures. I work in the Look Dev and Texturing department, creating both textures and shaders for film assets."
I begin the morning by checking emails, updates on the project and if I have been assigned any new tasks. I often set off a turntable render at the end of the day, so I review the render and submit it for feedback or simply as an update on my progress.
Based on the priority of my tasks, I begin working or continue working on a task from the day before. On occasion, I will be called down to the theatre room for dailies where the VFX supervisor and/or CG supervisor will review my work.
This is where feedback is provided or look dev for the asset is approved, which then goes to Lighting to render in shot. I take a lunch break and continue working till it’s time to set off another turntable and pack up for the night!"
What parts of your job get you out of bed in the morning?
"My entire job gets me out of bed! Each asset is completely different, providing a new set of challenges and details to observe and implement, making everyday exciting and fresh! Not to mention working alongside a fantastic team, Friday night drinks, table tennis, foosball and a never ending supply of tea and toast!"
What are some of the most important lessons you learned during your time at Media Design School?
"Media Design School taught me a great deal. From technical knowledge of software and the VFX pipeline to creative and observational skills, as well as working in teams and the importance of communication.
Prior to studying at MDS, I knew little to nothing of 3D visual effects. Were it not for hearing about MDS by pure chance, I would have never considered VFX as a career!
What tips would you give others looking to get into your field?
"Have a good attitude toward learning and improving your craft - people will always notice an eager and dedicated mind!"
What are your plans for the future?
"I have only just started what I hope to be a long-running career in the visual effects industry. Right now I am absolutely thrilled with where I am and what I am doing. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I can continue working on amazing films and projects in whatever way I can!"
