Best Overall: Blocks
Props to the Blocks creators, including Media Design School alumni and a talented programmer, for the game voted Best Overall at the Auckland Game Jam. It also won the “most obviously game programmer art” category. The art worked well with the theme, was appropriate, and improved the overall look and feel of the game. Blocks took out the “most likely to curse the computer” title. Play the game here
Insult
Ditching graphics, Insult is a speech-fighting game where the computer and player insult each other and are rewarded for the effort. An interesting concept. Nominated for “most colourful,” to the considerable amusement of the game jammers. Interestingly enough, this game was not nominated for the “most likely to result in cursing the computer” category.
Phoenix Fire
Media Design School alumni and students worked the theme into a birth-death-rebirth paradigm with a phoenix chick would level up or become a fully-fledged phoenix. A little Mario-esque this was fun and exciting. Like some of its predecessors, the “play-it-again Sam” annoyance factor will drive people nuts!
I don’t wanna be a dog
A team of industry veterans used their nous and experience on this simple 2D top-down view game – a surefire recipe a successful jam. Each time the game restarts the player becomes a different character with different abilities fighting different enemies. This was a favourite here at the Jam. A polished game that could be scrubbed up even more.
You have to eat yourself
Taking direct inspiration from them, the snake eats himself and continues to grow in this two-hour game. The result is a snake that can eat himself by entering the screen from the right and eating his tail continuously. A crowd pleaser.
